National
Transportation Week, Award of Excellence
Presented to Aviation Publishers Co. Limited President, Isabel L.Peppler,
and noted with the following comments:
"Ms. Peppler
received a B.A., from the University of Toronto in 1954. She received
a Canadian Private Pilots License in 1967.
"Since she first assumed responsibility for producing the manual
in 1966, it has required constant up-dating to keep current with
the ever-changing international and domestic rules and regulations.
It has sold over 300,000 copies world-wide in that time.
"It is the manual that was adopted by the Air Cadet League
of Canada as their primary study text. It is a textbook that is
recommended by Transport Canada for those preparing for all grades
of air pilot licenses. There probably is not one airline pilot flying
in Canada today who did not, at one time or another, study from
her book.
"The fact that Canadian licensed pilots are considered the
best qualified pilots of any country in the world, is worthy of
recognition and can be directly related to Ms. Peppler's contribution."

Aviation Hall of Fame McKee Trophy
Bill Peppler, Editor-in-Chief and Publisher of From The Ground Up, is a most recent recipient of one of Canada’s
most prestigious aviation awards, the Trans-Canada McKee Trophy. Presented by the Canadian Aeronautics and
Space Institute (CASI), and awarded annually since 1927, The McKee is awarded for outstanding achievement in the
field of air operations, and recognizes “a sustained high-level of performance” in the advancement of the use of
aviation. The presentation of the award was marked with the comments that follow.
“Through a career that has spanned over 60 years, Bill’s unfailing attraction to aviation has never wavered, nor have
his efforts to pave pathways in the sky for pilots.“
"As the Chief Flight Instructor of a flight training facility in Goderich, Ontario, Bill introduced hundreds of new pilots
to aviation in the late 1940's. During this time he earned his AME licence, becoming one of a select group of
individuals qualified as both a Commercial Pilot, and as an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer.
“Bill flew thousands of hours as a pilot for Spartan Air Services throughout the 1950's, often in perilous conditions,
doing aerial surveillance and magnetometer work and ferrying supplies in aircraft such as DC-3's, DH Beavers, and
Avro Ansons.
“As the Base Manager of Operations at Fort Churchill, Bill was responsible for coordinating a fleet of aircraft assigned
to the role of supporting the creation of the DEW (Defense Early Warning) Line across Canada’s north during the Cold
War, a critically important task for the time.
“Bill has made a wealth of contributions to the aviation industry in a variety of association leadership positions. For 39
years, from 1957 to 1996, he served as General Manager of the Canadian Owners and Pilots Association (COPA). He
then became the Canadian representative for the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA). From 1996 to 2001,
he served as the official representative of the International Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (IAOPA) at the
International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
“Since 1967, Bill has been the owner and president of Aviation Publishers Co. Limited in which capacity he has been
responsible for the content of one of the world’s most recognizeable titles in aeronautics, From The Ground Up, the
primary reference used by all students who learn to fly in Canada.
“In a lifetime during which he has amassed over 10,000 hours of flying time, Bill Peppler has spent his working career
at the service of the aviation community."
The award, presented to him at the annual CASI Senior Awards Banquet, resides at Canada’s Aviation
Hall of Fame.
